The group were told that the major piece of new work at the site was at Whitehouses pumping station, which was demolished in 1955. The new installation is covered by grids which allow you to see the sluices below. A volunteer told how the pumping station had been a refugee site during the war, with Londoners fleeing the blitz and Jewish refugees from Europe. Some of them had returned to give interesting background facts and stories. Social friends had a very informative and interesting afternoon thanks to the Wendover Arm Trust volunteers
